What We're Looking For

Design strategies to enhance chances for acceptance by the public and political officials. Develops innovative approaches for informing the public and generating feedback. Coordinates and implement media relations strategies, including producing media releases and media kits, conducting news conferences, conducting opinion research, implementing direct mail campaigns. Organizes and facilitate public meetings. Writes and produce newsletters, flyers, briefing books, manuals, brochures and a variety of other written products.

This position is responsible for leading HNTB's strategic communication efforts as an important part of key infrastructure projects. It will provide strategic direction and establish necessary communication and Government Relations content for accomplishing successful project outcomes.

Public infrastructure projects are increasingly complex, requiring difficult trade off decisions between sometimes competing scope and cost elements. They require well planned and executed public involvement strategies if they are to be successfully implemented and must today reflect the many diverse community expectations for varied community benefits and impacts.

HNTB's clients will require expert guidance in how to design, implement and execute the appropriate communications strategies. It is appropriate and highly desirable that we can provide those strategic services by internal HNTB resources while relying on sub consultants on performing the actual execution of the public involvement processes.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and adjusting the communication strategy for key infrastructure projects. This includes identifying important project stakeholders and how best to engage them in project public involvement processes.
  • Identify specific strategies to ensure that underserved communities are part of project communications, and that race and social justice equity objectives are achieved.
  • Plans, develops, and leads public involvement strategies and programs for clients to facilitate communication and acceptance of projects and initiatives. Sets goals and objectives for the public involvement program, identify potential audiences, review who is affected directly and indirectly, identify and involve new individuals and groups that appear
  • Adapts the communication strategies to reflect the social, political, and physical environment while maintaining the ability to adjust based on dynamic changes. This includes appropriate messaging to each stakeholder and the ability to identify and tailor strategies to such stakeholders.
  • Utilize government relations, office leadership and corporate resources in support of project/program strategic communication strategies. Ensure that Office and Division GR strategies are continuously updated to reflect current policy and political environment.
  • Oversees efforts of support staff and subconsultants to assure successful implementation and/or development of events, print and graphic materials as scoped providing direction as needed.
  • Develops strategy and coordinates dissemination of facts and information about client activities to external agencies, associations, and news organizations using print, radio and/or visual media.
  • Responsible for incorporating strategic communication strategy into the overall project lifecycle (planning, engineering, and construction).
  • In conjunction with other project leadership, presents proposals and strategies to clients to help win work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
    • Master's degree in Planning, Political Science, Marketing, Communications, English, Journalism or related field
    • 12 years related experience
    • Government Relations
    • Communication/Organizational Management Theory
    • Performance Measurement

Sets goals and objectives for the public involvement program, identify potential audiences, review who is affected directly and indirectly, identify and involve new individuals and groups that appear.
      • Directs and manages the public involvement staff in developing and administering public involvement programs.
      • Oversees efforts of support staff to assure successful implementation and/or development of events, print and graphic materials as scoped providing direction as needed.
      • Directs the development of and approves speeches, presentation materials, correspondence, and other media for use in presentations, mailings and/or meetings.
      • Develops strategy and coordinates dissemination of facts and information about client activities to external agencies, associations, and news organizations using print, radio and/or visual media.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
        Minimum Qualifications:
        • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Marketing, Communications, English, Journalism or related field
        • 10 years related experience
        • 4 years supervisory experience
