SummaryMOD's Legal Team is looking to add a Senior Corporate Counsel- Employment/Litigation to contribute to our trajectory as a high growth and people-first restaurant company. This role will support our People and Operations leaders to make strategic decisions and implement policies and practices in a pragmatic and risk-mitigated matter while enabling business growth. The position reports to the Chief Legal Officer.This position can be remote or hybrid in the Seattle area. Key Responsibilities+ Provides practical and proactive legal counsel on labor and employment related matters, which may include, without limitation, human resources issues, wage and hour law, workers' compensation, FSLA issues, unemployment and other state agency claims, labor relations, employee benefits, employment agreements and policy related issues, FMLA matters, employment related litigation, grievances and arbitrations. + Assists Chief Legal Officer and other executives with development and implementation of Company's labor relations strategy+ Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment areas (including developments in law) in order to flag trends in their infancy and advises on how to achieve business results and solutions in a pragmatic risk-mitigated manner. + Oversees the Company's litigation and partner with insurance brokers to develop reporting mechanisms and actionable insights.+ Develops, updates, and implements legal templates, training materials, guidebooks and policies.+ Helps create and conducts training on employment related issues and best practices.+ Primary contact to review, draft, and/or negotiate commercial agreements needed by the People Team + Supports HR-led investigations and conduct investigations on an occasional basis if circumstances require.+ Supports day-to-day legal matters as they arise and attend to general corporate matters.Basic Qualifications+ 6+ years of substantive labor and employment experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm, including strong familiarity with and substantial experience in advising on California employment matters (including PAGA). + Familiarity with ERISA and benefit programs (including insurance) strongly desirable. + Ability to manage heavy workload in a fast paced and high-volume environment.+ Good communication (oral and written) and relationship-building skills within and across departments (at all levels) and externally; assist in driving consensus on legal matters among multiple stakeholders.+ Sound judgment; ability to clearly make reasoned recommendations that balance achievement of business objectives with legal risk; ability to analyze cross-functionally. + Experience and interest in innovating new processes to streamline operations and increase efficiency, transparency and comprehension between client teams and legal.+ Self-starter with good business sense and a sense of urgency, integrity and fairness.+ Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law and an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.+ Experience with retail/consumer facing industries is a plus, but not required. + Ability to work in a team and keep teammates and clients apprised of status and key decisions needed.+ Sense of humor.+ Growth mindset and curiosity to learn legal and business operations, as well as other areas of law.Physical RequirementsOffice work involves remaining in a stationary position most of the time in front of a computer, using a keyboard, mouse and telephone. Regularly operate a computer and other office equipment.
