The Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Genetic Counselor 2 position at the University of Washington. Research conducted within the Division is funded primarily by federal grants to support scientific inquiry for the public good. This position includes work on a National Institutes of Health funded genomic medicine research study. More information can be found here:

This position will have duties at the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital. There is the possibility of 1-2 remote days per week.

Anticipated responsibilities of the Research Genetic Counselor include the following:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Undiagnosed Diseases Network - 75%

  • Collect, summarize, and present patient clinical information for research purposes.
  • Communicate with adult and pediatric patients with undiagnosed disorders and family members of pediatric patients in person or by telephone or electronic communications.
  • Facilitate study informed consent for research participants and family members.
  • Provide post-test education and counseling regarding results of genomic sequencing and other advanced diagnostic testing for adult and pediatric research participants and family members.
  • Apply clinical expertise for variant interpretation and summarize variants of interest for sequencing analysis reports and discussion with research team.
  • Document research activities and contribute phenotype and genotype data to network database, per protocol.
  • Collaborate with local faculty, physicians, genetic counselors, and staff on research study.
  • Conduct outreach and develop study recruitment materials for providers and families in the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Lead or collaborate on research publications and presentations.
  • Participate in national network working groups calls and projects.
  • Collaborate with Research Genetic Counselor Lead on task assignments based on experience and interests.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Principal Investigators, lead genetic counselor, and lead study coordinator.

    Supervision and Training - 15%

  • Train and supervise genetic counselors and research coordinators.
  • Train physicians in the UDN process and protocol.

    Process Improvement and Documentation - 10%

  • Develop methods to improve the UDN process and increase efficiency and applicant numbers.
  • Document research activities and contribute phenotype and genotype data to network database, per protocol.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A Master's Degree in genetics counseling or a related field from a program accredited by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel.
  • One year of experience as a Genetics Counselor 1.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Superb organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to thoroughly and accurately evaluate scientific literature.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
