Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Underwriting Consultant for Life and Disability!
About the role
In this role, you will contribute to the achievement of Symetra's sales, profitability, persistency, and service goals by underwriting new business and renewal accounts for Life, AD&D, Short Term Disability (STD), Family Medical Leave (FML) and Long-Term Disability (LTD), typically over 2,500 lives. In addition, you will serve as a back-up for the Regional Manager and have the same financial authority. You will also provide training and mentoring for the Underwriting Analysts (UA's) and other levels of underwriters, manage various strategic projects, and build beneficial relationships with other departments, producers, and policyholders.

  • Analyze competitor claim experience to develop experience rate, run manual rate and combine in accordance with credibility formulas to determine appropriate rate levels for new business accounts using a variety of rating and funding methods
    
  • Review plan and process design, determine changes and calculate associated rates
    
  • Negotiate new business rate and plan changes with Sales team and directly with producers and accounts attending presentation meetings as necessary
    
  • Process sold accounts following established procedures
    
  • Account size typically over 2,500 lives, complex and/or high visibility accounts, and sales expectations of $3.0 MM per year
    
    
    
  • Renewal Pricing and Book of Business Management
    
    • 
      
    • Analyze Symetra claim experience to develop experience rate, run manual rate and combine with credibility formulas to determine appropriate rate levels for in force accounts using a variety of rating and funding methods
      
    • Develop renewal package with experience and rate analysis, renewal decision, plan and process change recommendations and experience summary
      
    • Negotiate renewals with Account Management team and directly with producers and accounts, attending presentation meetings as necessary
      
    • Monitor assigned book of business to balance profitability and persistency and initiate actions to improve results
      
    • Process sold renewals following established procedures
      
    • Block size of 10-15 accounts primarily over 2,500 lives, complex and/or high visibility accounts with $25.0+ MM of annual premium
      
      
    • Train, mentor and provide decision making assistance to assigned UA team and act as backup to Regional Manager for all Underwriters (UW's)
      
      • 
        
      • Review work of UW's to ensure appropriate and technically sound development of rates and underwriting decisions
        
      • Ensures UA's have information needed to perform their jobs
        
      • Assist in interviewing and hiring of new staff members
        
      • Direct the appeal process from field staff and determine appropriate underwriting exceptions within authority guidelines - will have same financial authority level as Regional Managers
        
      • Serve as role model for other underwriters, viewed as the "go to" person for underwriting issues
        
        
      • Initiate and manage projects
        
        • 
          
        • Leads process improvement initiatives to improve productivity, accuracy and customer service and influences pricing tool/reporting development
          
        • Identifies training issues and recommends a course of action
          
        • Understands, applies, and explains Symetra's services, product standards, underwriting policies, strategic direction, and new initiatives
          
        • Works across Symetra's segments/markets to achieve goals
          
          
        • Relationships
          
          • 
            
          • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Symetra Sales, Account Management, Actuarial, Claims and Administrative teams
            
          • Visit Sales, producer, and account offices to conduct training, expand new business sales and assist in renewal sales
            
          • Provide superior customer service
            
          • Develop and maintain positive relationships with producers, accounts and reinsurance partners including participating in or leading external meetings

              Compensation
              Salary Range: $80,500 - $134,200 plus eligibility for annual bonus program
